Nordic Walking - Press Release |

2 May 2007
STEPPING OUT IN NORDIC WALKING STYLE TO RAISE CASH FOR CHARITY
Ski and Tennis sports shop owner Nicola McGuinness will be tackling two fundraising challenges later this month in an unusual fashion – by Nordic Walking her way round the two courses.
Nicola, who owns Harrogate’s newest ski and tennis sports store White Stone with husband Jonathan, is picking up her Nordic Walking poles to complete Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life and St Michael’s Hospice Midnight Walk.
She’s already persuaded friend Jane Hardman to Nordic Walk the Race for Life – and is hopeful others will tackle the 5km course on May 30 at Harrogate’s Great Yorkshire Showground with the poles, as well as the 6.5 mile Midnight Walk three days later.
“Nordic Walking is an excellent all-over body work-out,” said Nicola, whose shop in Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, has just taken delivery of the special Nordic Walking poles needed for the sport.
“I go walking regularly with friends. We complete a two-mile course and we feel like we’ve had good exercise. But with normal walking, you feel a lot of pressure on your legs while with Nordic Walking you seem to be a lot lighter on your feet and you can build up quite a speed. It feels easier and less tiring than normal walking, but is really good for you,” she said.
Earlier this week two Nordic Walking experts – Helen Brook and Trish Hirst from Leeds – dropped into the Harrogate shop to give Nicola, Jane and a group of would-be Nordic Walkers some tips on how to get the best from the sport.
The pair, both qualified Nordic Walking instructors, aim to set up a group in Harrogate for anyone interested in taking up the sport.
Said Nicola:“Nordic Walking started out as training for cross-country skiers and has great health benefits. You can burn 20 per cent more calories than normal walking and it helps reduce back, neck and shoulder pain too. It’s a very sociable way of exercising and great fun.”
Anyone wanting more information about Nordic Walking should contact Nicola or Jonathan at White Stone, Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, telephone 01423 858584 or go to www.white-stone.co.uk

Dainese Ski Jacket - Feature from the Yorkshire Post |
|
14 November 2007
WORLD’S FIRST-EVER LEATHER SKI JACKET ARRIVES IN HARROGATE
It’s the ultimate in stylish ski and outdoor wear – and if you have almost £500 to spare it could be yours.
Leading North Yorkshire ski and tennis store White Stone has taken delivery of the world’s first-ever leather ski jacket, and it’s causing quite a stir.
White Stone owner Jonathan McGuinness is very excited about the Italian-made Dainese jacket, which retails at £499 – and he has had a number of enquiries already about the sleek black jacket.
His stylish store on Harrogate’s Cold Bath Road is one of only two outside London to have been chosen to stock the hip and trendy jacket.
“Never before has a manufacturer been able to make a ski jacket from leather. But Dainese has joined forces with Gore Tex to create something totally new.
“The Gore Tex and leather has been bonded together to create a fully breathable and fully waterproof fabric. It’s the ultimate jacket for the slopes – or just if you want a cool leather jacket,” said Jonathan, whose shop in Harrogate opened its doors 12 months ago.
As a former assistant coach to Olympic skiing brothers Graham and Martin Bell, Jonathan knows a thing or two about ski clothes – and hardware.
His Harrogate store, which he runs with wife Nicola, stocks a wide range of ski clothing and accessories from not just Dainese, but newly launched E+O, Peak Performance, Poivre Blanc and German brand Bogner. Jonathan and Nicola also stock a good selection of skis, from Volkl, Elan and Head.
White Stone also stocks a great selection of lifestyle clothing from sailing brand Quba Sails, including jackets made from recycled sail cloth, and leisure wear.
The store is also a major stockist of tennis and squash gear – both clothing and equipment. Visit www.white-stone.co.uk or visit them at Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. White Stone is open seven days a week.

Business Feature - Yorkshire Post November 2007 |

23 NOVEMBER 2007
MY PASSION
Jonathan McGuinness is the owner of stylish ski and tennis sports shop White Stone in Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. He worked as assistant coach to Olympic and World Cup skiers Graham and Martin Bell before realizing his dream of opening his own shop.
I was just a young lad when the skiing bug hit me. As a pupil at Salt Grammar School in Baildon, I was given the chance to go on a school skiing trip to a resort in the Itallian Dolomites when I was 11 years old. That first time on skis was just amazing – it was so exciting and so exhilarating, I will never forget it. I really was hit by the ski bug.
I was lucky enough to be able to go a few times after that, with the school again, to other resorts across Europe, and it was around that time that I got involved with the junior ski club at Harrogate. The Harrogate Ski Centre, which is no longer around, was a great place to be and I became really involved in racing and freestyle skiing.
As soon as it snowed, I was out on Baildon Moor, close to where I lived, with my skis and boots, building jumps and skiing whenever I possibly could.
After leaving school I hung around the dry ski slope in Harrogate until they gave me a job, and I worked there for around 18 months, completing all my instructors’ qualifications. It was a fantastic place to work – and it led to me getting a job with Graham and Martin Bell as an assistant coach. At the time, the brothers, both from Harrogate, were doing really well on the World Cup ski circuit, and they asked if I could join them.
I spent four years working alongside Graham and Martin as their assistant coach. We spent a lot of time training on Austrian and Swiss glaciers in the summer. The brothers were involved in technical training in the summer and speed training in the autumn before the start of the World Cup Downhill circuit in December for the Premiere Neige at Val D’Isere. It was just superb, spending all that time in the mountains and skiing. I felt very lucky and privileged to have been given the chance to work as an assistant coach. One season I was watching all the famous ski racers on Ski Sunday and the next I was setting training courses for them before a World Cup race as we often worked with the Austrian and Norwegian national teams.
But all good things come to an end, and I decided it was time to get a ‘proper’ job and started working in the finance side of car sales. But that didn’t affect my love of skiing.
Now I own my own ski shop and still meet up with Graham and Martin for skiing trips. Earlier this year I met with the brothers in Austria, where we spent a lot of time in the 1980s, to test out new skis with them and they were guests of honour at the opening of White Stone last year. It’s really a dream come true to be working in the ski industry as it still is my passion.

About - Peak Performance
In 1986, while on a ski lift in Åre, two of Sweden¹s top downhill skiers talked about starting a new Swedish clothing company. A company founded on a mutual passion for skiing and an interest for good design. A company offering a line of garments designed principally for skiing and outdoor wear. The founders wanted to create functional and attractive garments for the lifestyle they themselves lived and loved.
Stefan Engström was a former top professional skier in Sweden and internationally. He had a great interest in clothing design and had worked in the clothing business. Peter Blom held an advanced business degree with experience as a former editor of a popular Swedish ski magazine and a fashion magazine. These two, together with several other ski enthusiasts,
started Peak Performance.
Åre, a classic ski resort in the north central Swedish mountains, is regarded as an ideal location for winter sports. Åre is popular among demanding ski tourists and top skiers from around the world. It often serves as a venue for international sporting events.
New ideas for upcoming collections still originate from Åre. The company still derives its inspiration from the beautiful natural surroundings, clean air and the joy of skiing which the mountains provide.
