Amundsen Sports Ski Wear — Norwegian Adventure, Tradition and Innovation

Amundsen Sports creates distinctive outdoor and ski wear inspired by Norway’s tradition of exploration. Founded in Oslo by Jørgen Amundsen and Erik Friis, the brand combines lessons from the past with modern materials and technical construction to produce clothing designed for life in the mountains and beyond.

The philosophy behind Amundsen is closely connected to Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who became the first person to lead an expedition to the South Pole in 1911. Rather than relying only on the accepted equipment of his time, he studied how people had lived and travelled successfully in extreme northern climates, combining traditional knowledge with the most advanced technology then available.

That balance between tradition and innovation remains central to Amundsen Sports today. Its collections bring together natural materials, European craftsmanship and carefully considered technical details, creating ski wear with a character quite unlike that of conventional outdoor clothing.

    The Amundsen Sports Collection

Our carefully selected Amundsen Sports collection includes technical ski clothing and versatile alpine layers for men and women. Each piece has been chosen for its quality, practicality and distinctive Norwegian design.

    • Ski jackets and anoraks — technical outerwear designed to provide protection, freedom of movement and unmistakable Amundsen styling.
    • Ski pants — durable mountain clothing combining modern performance fabrics with practical, heritage-inspired details.
    • Merino wool layers — naturally breathable sweaters, hoodies and mid-layers offering warmth without unnecessary bulk.
    • Après-ski clothing — versatile knitwear and outerwear designed to move comfortably between the mountains, resort and everyday life.
    • Accessories — practical finishing pieces influenced by Scandinavian outdoor culture and traditional expedition clothing.

    Inspired by Roald Amundsen

Jørgen Amundsen grew up with the story of Roald Amundsen as part of his family history. His great-grandfather was a cousin of the celebrated polar explorer, whose methods and philosophy later provided the inspiration for Amundsen Sports.

Roald Amundsen’s achievements were not based on courage alone. During his years in the Arctic, he learned from Inuit communities about clothing, equipment, transport and survival in severe cold. He combined that accumulated knowledge with careful preparation and the latest technology of his era.

Amundsen Sports follows a similar principle: looking at materials and garments that have worked for generations, understanding why they worked and then adapting those ideas for modern outdoor life.

Inspired by the Past, Built for the Future

Jørgen Amundsen founded the company after becoming frustrated by an outdoor clothing market increasingly dominated by fleece and synthetic fabrics. He wanted to reintroduce natural materials such as wool and cotton while combining them with modern technical construction where it genuinely improved performance.

This approach can be seen throughout the collection. Traditional Norwegian knitwear sits alongside technical three-layer ski clothing, while heritage fabrics and expedition-inspired details are adapted to meet the needs of contemporary skiers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The result is not a reproduction of historic clothing. It is a modern interpretation of proven ideas, designed to be functional in demanding conditions while remaining comfortable and refined enough for everyday wear.

    Natural Materials and European Craftsmanship

Materials are fundamental to Amundsen Sports. The brand works with specialist manufacturers across Europe, selecting fabrics not simply for their appearance but for their durability, comfort and suitability for outdoor use.

Depending on the garment and collection, these materials may include:

    • Norwegian wool — valued for its durability and natural ability to provide warmth in a demanding climate.
    • Italian merino wool — soft, breathable and naturally temperature regulating, making it particularly suited to alpine layering.
    • Scottish waxed cotton — a long-lasting material that can be maintained and reproofed, developing greater character through use.
    • Swiss Ventile cotton — a densely woven, breathable and highly weather-resistant fabric originally developed for demanding conditions.
    • Austrian loden wool — a traditional Alpine fabric known for warmth, quietness and natural water resistance.
    • French corduroy — a durable heritage fabric used to add texture, comfort and distinctive character.

    The Norwegian Idea of Friluftsliv

Amundsen Sports reflects the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv: enjoying an open-air life and maintaining a close connection with nature throughout the seasons. It is not limited to extreme expeditions or reaching the highest summit. It can also mean skiing with friends, walking through the mountains or simply spending more time outdoors.

This helps explain the versatility of the collection. Amundsen clothing is designed to perform outdoors, but many pieces are equally suited to travelling, relaxing in a ski resort or wearing at home. The brand describes this approach as refined Norwegian outdoor living rather than outdoor clothing reserved only for the most extreme conditions.

    Clothing Designed to Gain Character

Amundsen believes outdoor clothing should be worn and enjoyed rather than kept looking untouched. Many of its natural fabrics soften, crease and develop a patina over time, allowing each garment to reflect the journeys and experiences of its owner.

This is particularly evident in the brand’s waxed cotton, wool and corduroy pieces. With appropriate care, these materials can be maintained, repaired and used for many seasons. Rather than following short-lived trends, Amundsen concentrates on timeless designs intended to become familiar and dependable parts of an outdoor wardrobe.

    Field Tested for Real Adventures

Amundsen develops and tests its clothing in real outdoor environments, from the Arctic and the Alps to the Rockies and Norwegian fjords. These field-testing adventures allow the brand to assess how its products perform while skiing, travelling and spending extended periods outdoors.

This practical approach helps ensure that technical details serve a genuine purpose. Durability, breathability, movement and protection are considered alongside comfort and appearance, resulting in clothing designed to be used rather than simply admired.

    The Amundsen Difference

    • Norwegian outdoor heritage – inspired by the methods, preparation and adventurous spirit of Roald Amundsen.
