Spotlight on... Lech

Europe is home to some of the world's very best ski resorts, and Austria has it's fair share of them! Continuing our series, here is our spotlight on Lech...

Lech Ski Resort

Lech, in Austria's Vorarlberg region, is a large resort with 80+ ski lifts and approximately 1000 meters of vertical descent.  Lech is a traditional Austrian ski resort on the banks of the river Lech, approximately 120 km west of Innsbruck, and 20km from the town and ski resort of St Anton.

The town and ski area of Zurs is 5km south of Lech, and Zug is 3km to the west. Lech is very popular with families because of it's gentle slopes, ski-in ski-out hotels and the resort's many facilities for children.

With 222 acres of ski terrain over 54 pistes Lech is very well suited to beginner and intermediate level skiers, though it does boast approximately 20 kilometers of cross country ski terrain.

The resort has only one black run on-piste, though there are ski routes and off-piste skiing that are well suited to expert level skiers. As much of Alberg’s toughest terrain is located around St Anton and Stuben, very few advanced skiers venture to Lech, so the major benefit for those that do is that the off-piste ski areas are usually not too heavily tracked!

The town of Lech am Arlberg itself has plenty of accommodation options, with a multitude of hotels ranging from 1-5 stars. Some of Lech's hotels are slope-side, offering the convenience of being ski-in/ski-out. In the height of the ski season the resort's slope-side hotels are popular for their restaurants, especially at lunch-times.

Like other Vorarlberg resorts Lech is rich in traditional Austrian culture, and has plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. Though the resort is arguably not as much of a nightlife center as the neighbouring St Anton, Lech still offers plenty of après activities. One of the key advantages of a stay in Lech is that visitors can easily combine their stay with some time at St Anton; The electronic Alberg skicard includes access to both Lech and St Anton, which can be accessed by free buses that take about thirty minutes.
